EVENT DETAILS – Keys to Successful Business in Oceania 2013
Welcome to the May 2013 edition of the TropLinks newsletter. As someone who spends a lot of time trying to explain complex technical or governance concepts to people of other cultures I’ve come across a few simple truths.
Some kitchen table truths about cross-cultural communication.
We all tend to get hung up on the differences between cultures when we venture overseas especially for business. But a few simple tips can make the experience much easier and your success rate much higher:
When you strip away the mainly superficial differences between cultures, the basic human is pretty much the same, so focus on how you would like to be treated and do that to other people.
Don’t take your muddy boots into the kitchen – take a moment to look around and see what’s happening before bulldozing in with our relatively loud Australian customs – we are in someone else’s house and we need to follow their rules.
People may not share your language, but that doesn’t make them less intelligent so don’t try to bluff people – if your message isn’t something that you would be comfortable saying at home to people who can see right through you, don’t try it overseas.
Ask lots of questions, show an interest in what’s going on around you, and show that you appreciate what you are seeing.
